Everything You Need To Know About Our En-suite Revamp

They say good things come to those who wait.

Our en-suite was the one room in our house that I could not wait to get my hands on after we moved in. But it worked perfectly fine, which meant that it wasn’t an immediate priority for us. Then over time, as is often the way, other rooms took precedence, or we had more urgent matters to deal with. Finally, eight years down the line, we finally have a new en-suite. I love it - and hope that you do to!

The Design

I knew from very early on that I wanted to make our en-suite feel luxurious and as if I had escaped to a boutique hotel.

Now, I believe that your home should always represent you, and that you should always be honest about who you are when planning out your interiors. Personally, I love the idea of baths but in all honesty I don’t find them relaxing - all I can think about is what else I could, or should be doing! They just don’t do much for me.

But - I DO love a shower. So with our main bathroom still being very much the ‘family’ bathroom (think plastic toys, bath chalks and bubble baths in all colours of the rainbow) I saw the chance to create myself a little haven with a rainfall shower - and reader, I took it!

Key elements for me were to maximise the space as best I could, make a few key changes that would elevate the everyday and to finally use those pink striped tiles that have been on my wish list for a very long time!

The Layout

There really wasn’t much opportunity for movement in terms of the layout in this space, but one thing we were really keen to achieve was a walk-in shower and to bring the shower tray down to floor level. Luckily, the original shower turned out to have been fitted to a stud wall, and this gave us the opportunity to create the shower we wanted.

The sink, taps and WC remain in the same place as before, but thanks to the mastery of our plumber extraordinaire, Chris Rodney, we were able to move our pipes underneath the floor, removing the need to box them in and therefore further creating an illusion of extra floor space.

The Bathroom

Using my pink striped tiles as my point of reference, the hunt was on to find some complementary tiles for both the shower enclosure and the sink area.

I knew that I wanted vertical tiles around the sink to give the illusion of height and follow the direction of the striped floor. Luckily, I found the perfect shade of pink ceramic zellige tiles, and a pretty taupe marble effect tile for the shower at a local trader.

Drawn to the Moray collection at Easy Bathrooms, I quickly selected the hardware in champagne gold and the new Amiens shower screen as I love reeded glass, and a tall white towel rail from the Easy Bathrooms range.

Often with design comes compromise – I would have loved to have some wall lights flanking the mirror, but there was not enough space either side of the sink (or indeed above) to make them worthwhile. Instead, I have gone for dimmable spots in order to control the lighting. Finding a sink and unit perfect for the space also proved difficult but we found a great version at Lusso. The bobbin mirror from Bertola Home Studio in 'Olive' helps to ground all of the pink and fits perfectly in the space.

I’m still unsure if I’ll bring in any colour on the walls, at the moment I’m just loving how clean and bright it all looks!

The Master

None of this would have been possible without Chris Rodney of Chris Rodney Plumbing & Heating, who quickly recognised my exacting standards(!) but took on every request with good humour and truly delivered over and above each time. We are delighted with the results!
